Autism Awareness Month

This blog post is sponsored. All opinions are 100% my own.
April is autism awareness month. Autism is something near and dear to my heart because I have a daughter that is on the spectrum. Which at times can make parenting beautiful and hard.

Some people seem surprised when I tell them my daughter is on the spectrum. It's usually not something I talk about because if you think about it, we all are made uniquely.

Autism Awareness Month

I first noticed a problem when my daughter was in 5th or 6th grade. She would melt down and always thought someone was bullying her at school. Then she stopped doing her homework.

I spent a whole summer having her tested, and that's when I learned about NLD, which is a non-verbal learning disorder.

I beg of you if you sense that something is off with your child to get them tested. You as the parent know when something is off.  I'm not talking about having them checked with the school. I'm talking about hiring a psychiatrist to perform tests.

Not only did I find out about NLD they discovered sensory issues and impulse.

When you learn what's wrong, it's like a light goes off in your head. It helps you to parent differently. Knowing what's wrong allows grace.

I also recommend working with a therapist to teach coping methods. I think using coping techniques has helped my daughter deal with life.

One excellent way to help is Aqua-Tots Snap program. SNAP is Aqua-Tots Swim School's special needs aquatic program. Aqua-Tots has terrific success stories from this adaptive swim education program. This program provides customized swim lessons to meet each child's specific needs. Also, the class accesses goals that you would like your child to achieve! So, each lesson is different for each child's needs! SNAP is one of a kind swim program located in the Metro Detroit area!
